HYDROGEN CANADA

DISCOVERING MASSIVE POTENTIAL OF CANADA'S ABUNDANT AND LOW-COST NATURAL GAS
TO PRODUCE CO2-FREE CLEAN HYDROGEN/AMMONIA TO SUPPLY ASIAN MARKET.

Hydrogen Canada’s project will strengthen the value of Canada’s natural resources by converting natural gas to hydrogen using Autothermal Reforming ("ATR") technology with on site Carbon Capture and Storage (“CCS”).

The transportation of hydrogen has been planned to use Ammonia and Hydrogen Canada is planning to send  Clean Ammonia to Asian markets targeting South Korea and Japan from Canada’s west coast. The transported Clean Ammonia will directly use for coal co-firing or bunkering or will be dehydrogenated for the Hydrogen uses.

The project will be one of the largest Clean Hydrogen/Ammonia producing project in Canada upon completion by 2030. When fully operational, Hydrogen Canada’s project will produce up to 500 tonnes Hydrogen per day, approximately 1 million tonnes per year of CO2 - free Clean Ammonia, while recycling 5,000 tonnes per day of CO2.

HYDROGEN

What is Hydrogen ? Hydrogen is the chemical element with the symbol H and atomic number 1. With a standard atomic weight of 1.008, hydrogen is the lightest element in the periodic table. Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical substance in the universe, constituting roughly 75% of all baryonic mass. Hydrogen contains about three times the energy of natural gas, and it is an energy carrier that can store energy from other sources. It is a clean energy that only produces water, electricity, and heat when consumed in a fuel cell.

How to produce Hydrogen ? Hydrogen can be produced from various resources such as fossil fuels, biomass and electrolysis of water with electricity. The environmental impact and energy efficiency of hydrogen depends on how it is produced. There are three types of hydrogen which are grey hydrogen from fossil fuels, blue hydrogen from fossil fuels with CCS, and green hydrogen from electrolysis of water. Based on BP’s estimation, blue hydrogen will take up more than 50 % of total hydrogen production in 2040.

Where to use Hydrogen ? Hydrogen has the potential for use in a broad range of applications in all sectors such as transportation, commercial, industrial, residential and portable, and will play an important role in our energy future. When consumed in a fuel cell, hydrogen only produces electricity, water, and heat.

How much Hydrogen do we need ? With its potential to be used in virtually all sectors in various applications, the annual demand is expected to increase tenfold from 2015 to 2050 – from 8 EJ (1018 joules) in 2015 to almost 80 EJ in 2050 (Hydrogen Council). Hydrogen has energy density of 120 ~ 142 MJ/kg (MJ = 106 joules), which indicates that by 2050, up to 539 million tonnes of hydrogen would be needed.

INNOVATION

Autothermal Reforming (“ATR”) : ATR is a process to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide by partially oxidizing a hydrocarbon feed such as natural gas with oxygen and carbon dioxide or steam and subsequent catalytic reforming. The reaction takes place in a single chamber where the methane is partially oxidized and the reaction is exothermic due to the oxidation.

4 + O2 + CO2 -> 3 H2 + 3 CO + H2O  (using CO2)
4 CH
4 + O2 + 2 H2O -> 10 H2 + 4 CO  (using steam)

Hydrogen to Ammonia :
Hydrogen could be converted to ammonia which significantly reduces the volume and allows longer term storage and long-distance transport. In liquid state, ammonia can reduce the volume of hydrogen to 1/1300th which is favourable even compared with liquid hydrogen that reduces the volume to 1/800th.

Carbon Capture & Storage (“CCS”) : Production of 1kg of hydrogen has associated production of ~ 10 kg of CO
2, and the carbon capture plant can remove 67 ~ 90 % of the produced CO2. According to the Government of Alberta, Edmonton is one of the best location for CO2 injection in the world with enormous capacity for injection into an underground formation.  Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) has a capacity to move 40,000 MT/d of CO2 from industrial area to injection sites, equivalent to 14.6 Million MT/y.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation to West Coast : Utilizing existing high capacity infrastructure, Hydrogen Canada will safely and efficiently transport hydrogen produced from our Edmonton facility as Ammonia by rail to locations within North America and to Canada’s west coast for Asian  markets.

Target Markets : Driven by increasing demand, especially in Asia, North America, and Europe, global hydrogen demand is expected to grow rapidly. Hydrogen Canada is excited to supply CO2 - free blue hydrogen from Canada’s natural gas to meet the growing demand of the world.

SUSTAINABILITY

Economic Benefits : Hydrogen Canada’s project will create more than 2,000 jobs and 100 permanent skilled jobs in Alberta, Canada. Developing robust value chain utilizing Canada’s abundant and low-cost natural gas will help the industry suffering from discounted natural gas price, and secure long-term future for Canada’s resources. Not only will it benefit the related industries, but also existing local businesses and industries, unlocking significant economic value for Alberta and Canada, while advancing to meet our GHG emission reduction targets.

Environment Impacts : Hydrogen Canada’s operation in Edmonton, Canada will minimize CO
2 emissions up to 90 % using proven CO2 capture technology and Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL)’s existing CO2 transportation and management systems to minimize environmental impacts. Based on the estimation of environmental research, the global hydrogen economy would reduce the climate impact of fossil fuel system it replaces by 99.4 % (Derwent et al., 2006)
